Well, is form necessary? The obvious answer would be Yes. But taking growth into consideration, No. Because whenever you’re lifting, correct form or not. You’re using your muscles and eventually tearing muscle fibers and that is how you cause growth. But let’s be realistic and understand why the form is necessary: -

1.) To Target Specific Muscle Group

2.) To Prevent Injury

Ego lifting and using momentum to lift heavy not only increases your chances of injury but you are also not getting as much benefit from the exercise as you would have if done with proper form. The form is a type of guideline for beginners, to avoid injury.

Now talking about muscle growth without proper form. To be honest it is true to some extent. But you must understand that you’re not getting as much benefit from the exercise itself and also creating muscle imbalances on your body.

There is a debate that form isn’t necessary and bad form won’t cause injury because all the powerlifters do the same. However, this isn’t true because powerlifters are elite level athletes and they know their body better than anyone else they know when to stop and what will cause injury, you must understand that these people are getting paid for their body and they can manipulate the weights with their desire.

But just because form is necessary you shouldn’t depend on it completely. As an intermediate in the gym, you have the freedom to not totally focus on form as long as your it is 80-85% correct and you’re not using momentum to get the weights off of the ground, you’re good to go.
